About This Place

Nestled in the vibrant neighborhood of San Francisco’s Sunset District, Mr Szechuan offers a masterclass in authentic Sichuan cuisine that keeps locals and visitors coming back for more. This bustling restaurant delights diners with an impressive menu showcasing the bold, complex flavors that define Sichuan cooking, skillfully balancing fiery heat with the signature numbing sensation from the prized Sichuan peppercorns. Whether you’re a spice aficionado or a curious first-timer, Mr Szechuan makes every dish an adventure in taste.

The dining experience here is a celebration of texture and aroma. Start off with their scintillating appetizers like the Soup Dumplings (小笼包) that are perfectly delicate with juicy pork filling, or the green onion pancake (葱油饼) whose crispy, flaky layers deliver a fragrant burst of savory goodness. For noodle lovers, the Minced Pork Noodle (肉燥面) is a comforting bowl of rich, meaty sauce balanced by tender noodles, while the braised beef noodle soup (红烧牛肉面) offers deep, slow-cooked flavors that are both hearty and soul-warming.

Among the crowd favorites, the Dry Pot and Super Dry Pot (超级麻辣香锅) stand out as must-tries. These dishes bring together an array of premium ingredients cooked in a vibrant, spicy sauce that perfectly marries heat and tongue-tingling numbness, creating a sensory symphony that ignites your palate. The Mapo Tofu delivers an exquisite blend of silky tofu and spicy ground pork simmered in a bold, fragrant chili bean sauce that leaves a memorable impression. Those craving something more indulgent often rave about the Szechuan Lamb and sesame chicken (芝麻鸡), which are expertly prepared with layers of spicy, sweet, and savory flavors.

The restaurant also shines in its variety of noodles and rice dishes—from the Beef Chow Mein and Beef Chow Fun to the flavorful and satisfying chili beef stew noodle soup (香辣牛腩面). The Classic and Super Bento options offer a wonderfully curated sampling of popular dishes, perfect for those who want to explore multiple flavors in one meal.

Beyond the food, Mr Szechuan’s atmosphere buzzes with casual warmth and authentic charm. Despite the lively kitchen hustle, guests consistently commend the attentive, friendly service—Alvin, one of the servers, has been highlighted for his upbeat hospitality, ensuring that every guest feels welcome and well cared for. The restaurant’s late-hour availability until 1AM makes it an excellent choice for night owls craving that fiery Sichuan kick after a concert or a long day.

Customer reviews echo the rich consistency of taste and generous portions. Patrons often mention the flavorful dry string beans and the addictive chili wontons, while others highlight the harmonious balance of spice and quality ingredients evident in dishes like the Mao Xue Wang (毛血旺) and the bolstered little hot pot (麻辣烫).

In all, dining at Mr Szechuan is more than just a meal—it’s an immersive culinary journey into one of China’s most beloved regional cuisines. Whether you crave the distinct tingle of mala spice or the comforting warmth of hand-pulled noodles, this gem on Taraval Street delivers unforgettable flavors with every bite.

We came here late and hungry after a concert and were super pleased with both the service and the quality and flavor of the food. We ordered Ma Po Tofu which was perfectly spiced and left a tingle on the tongue. The General Tso's chicken was divine. The dry string beans were my favorite and were so flavorful. Alvin the server couldn't have been nicer. He was hustling all night.

Absolutely loved this place. Started with the chili wontons which were excellent, and then got the Sichuan dry pot which was incredible. Very generous portions for price, and the sauce was so damn good. Staff was super friendly, and the food came out quick! Easy five stars.

Great experience - 10/10. Super friendly staff and delicious food. We got the Mongolian beef, the little hot pot, and the scallion pancake. Would definitely come back again and get the same meal!

The dry pot was very good. Hot & Spicy has a great balance between the numbness and spice. Seems like high quality ingredients, great flavor and cooked well. Overall the food was awesome. The service however was lacking, despite being the only group in the restaurant. For that reason I'll have to drop it to a 4 but I will surely recommend this place still.

One of my favorite spots for Sichuan food. I come here several times a month when I’m craving mala dry pot. Their super dry pot is my favorite and the portions are big enough for two. Their boiled fish is also really tasty. Perfect numbing spice flavor. Service is fast and friendly. Another plus - this place is open late until 1AM!

The food here was delicious! I totally recommend the chili beef stew (not pictured because we ate it so quickly). The service was really fast, and if you’re craving something late at night, I definitely recommend this place.

The food was SOO good. Definitely worth a try! If you like spicy chinese food, this is the restaurant you go to. The braised pork was super delicious too and the spicy fish filet was great! Definitely worth a try!
